Salary: $48,653 (Step 01) to $63,254 (Step 10);

NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Responsibilities

As a Biological Science Technician (Fisheries) within the Western Fisheries Research Center, some of your specific duties will include: 

  • Assists in the development of field and lab research study plans.
  • Anesthetizes juvenile pacific salmonids, pacific lampreys, and other marine fish species for surgical implantation of transmitters.
  • Utilizes radio telemetry systems to locate and monitor fish.
  • Compiles and refines data; performs computations and numerical summaries; prepares charts and reports. 
  • Trains less experienced staff on field and lab procedures and data collection protocols.
  • Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver. 

Physical Demands and Work Environment Description:

Field work frequently involves strenuous exertion including prolonged walking over wet, rocky surfaces and intermittent to prolonged walking over wet, rocky surfaces, and intermittent to prolonged climbing, lifting, pushing, pulling, balancing, crouching, and other related activities. The position includes exposure to inclement weather, physical exertion and long hours in the field.

Work environment varies from field sites to laboratories, to offices. Work involves moderate risks and discomforts such as high noise levels and exposure to chemicals, adverse weather conditions, and extreme temperatures that may require following special safety procedures.

Conditions of Employment as required by the USGS Watercraft Safety Program:

  • Must be able to take and pass the Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification for the duration of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Wilderness or Advanced First Aid certification for duration of employment.

Travel Required

50% or less - Overnight travel of up to 10 nights per month may be required.
