Job Description

The Ohio Environmental Council seeks a part-time contractor to direct Ohio Clinicians for Climate Action (OCCA) to assemble and activate medical clinicians who are committed to advocating on behalf of their patients for climate action. The contractor will serve as the organization’s liaison between OEC staff and clinician advocates in Ohio. The contractor will build relationships and network within medical professional associations of Ohio to build the membership of the OCCA. This position will work on a daily basis to turn clinicians into skilled public messengers conveying the importance of climate change as a public health issue.  

Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Climate Programs, the contractor will:

  • Recruit and build relationships with clinicians, Ohio chapters of medical associations, and medical students and residents in training throughout Ohio
  • Train clinicians on communication and advocacy tools and skills, persuasive writing, lawmaker education, and peer-to-peer recruitment
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other organizations working to mobilize clinicians on environmental issues and climate
  • Create and disseminate issue toolkits (which include policy updates and action and engagement opportunities)
  • Encourage and support the preparation of testimony on agency rules and legislation at local, state, and federal levels
  • Provide content and talking points for traditional and social media communications and identify opportunities for op-ed placement, statements, LTEs, press conferences

Occasional travel, evening, and weekend work may be required for meetings with partners, donors, reporters/editorial boards, and for conferences.

Qualifications

  • Organizing or advocacy experience including knowledge of lawmaker education and media strategies
  • Experience and ability to build positive relationships with clinicians, partner organizations, health system leaders, policymakers, and government employees
  • Project management experience, including planning and organizing events with multiple stakeholders and partners
  • Interest in working at the intersection of climate and public health
  • Familiarity with leading health systems in Ohio, ideally with working experience and contacts in the health care sector

Compensation

This position is planned for two years with continuation dependant on funding. Hourly rate depends on experience and is competitive.
