Note: Hourly part-time employees are limited to working no more than 960 hours per fiscal year, and are provided hours as-needed by the Department.

The beautiful Southern California coastal City of San Clemente is seeking a qualified individual to serve as Environmental Programs Intern. This position will support the City's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Stormwater programs. Assist with administrative tasks to support stormwater staff in the implementation of a variety of programs. Assist with public education and outreach tasks. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications such as ArcMap and ArcGIS Online is desired. GIS tasks may include collecting GIS data for storm drain and utility systems, entering data into databases, editing GIS infrastructure maps, and developing watershed, best management practice, and monitoring data and maps.  

Minimum Qualifications & The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a high school diploma and will be working toward a Bachelor's or Master's degree with major course work in environmental science, engineering, planning, political science, public administration or a related field.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of:

  • Research, data management, and report writing.
  • Microsoft Word and Excel applications, and
  • Some knowledge of AutoCAD and ARCGIS.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to:

  • Work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Good public relations skills.
  • Work with a database. 

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Experience with writing reports, conducting research, and data management.


  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, AutoCAD, and ARCGIS.
