Job Description

Leidos is seeking a full-time Environmental Scientist to provide on-site support for the Eglin Air Force Base (AFB) Natural Resources Office at Jackson Guard. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Review and comment on Air Force Form 813s (Environmental Impact Analysis) for Eglin Natural Resources Office
    • Understand all components of natural resource programs (Wildlife, Fire, and Forestry) and ensure associated concerns from proposed actions are addressed
    • Determine whether a Consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service or National Marine Fisheries Service is required, in accordance with associated laws
    • Identify projects that need a CMZA Determination
    • Provide and update comments, including review of Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements, as needed
  • Provide CZMA Determinations
    • Understand Florida statutes as they relate to each proposed action and know which level of CZMA determination may be needed
    • Prepare and submit Determination to Florida Department of Environmental Protection
  • Develop Consultation Documents
    • Understand ESA Section 7 Consultations, timelines, and processes
    • Develop Biological Assessments that analyze impacts from military actions to threatened and endangered species at Eglin AFB
      • May require developing maps in ArcGIS
      • Understand levels of impact and which effect determinations are required
  • Coordinate with government customers, mission proponents, and other Eglin environmental personnel on a daily basis; provide briefings and conduct pre/post-mission surveys as needed
  • Track status of all ongoing projects and missions to ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner, avoiding mission delays while ensuring all requirements are coordinated and implemented as required


Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, biological science, or other natural science discipline with 2-4 years relevant experience; Master’s Degree in a similar field is a plus.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills with an understanding of environmental laws including the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA), Endangered Species Act (ESA), National Environmental Policy Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, and Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Management and Conservation Act
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team, including frequent interactions with government personnel and contractors
  • Highly-organized, a motivated self-starter, and able to juggle multiple tasks with concurrent deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with threatened and endangered species and critical habitats at Eglin AFB is preferred
  • Experience working on Department of Defense projects
  • ArcGIS experience
  • Understanding of government and contractor roles
