Details

The University of Utah’s Department of Communication, housed in the College of Humanities, seeks applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Science, Environmental, and/or Risk Communication, effective July 1, 2019. The successful candidate will have an outstanding research record in one or more of these areas of study, as well as a background in quantitative research methods. This position is primarily centered in the Department’s Communicating Science, Health, Environment and Risk area of emphasis. Scholarship that complements one or more of the Department’s other areas of emphasis is desirable but not a requirement. Scholars who examine issues of social justice; race, sexuality, class, and gender equity; and questions of diversity in relation to science, environmental, and risk communication are desirable.

The standard annual teaching load for tenure-track faculty in the Department is 2/2. The strongest candidates will demonstrate the ability to teach courses in strategic communication, science or environmental communication, and quantitative research methods to support the college’s largest undergraduate major. The candidate will also advise master’s and doctoral students and teach graduate level courses in their area of expertise in the Department’s highly ranked graduate program in Communication.

Qualified applicants will have a Ph.D. in Communication or a closely related discipline by July 1, 2019 (A.B.D. candidates will also be considered); an active research program leading to publication; potential for success in grant acquisition; a record of or demonstrated potential for teaching excellence; and a willingness to conduct service for the department, University, and in the field of communication.

Formal review of applications will begin on October 1, 2018 , and continue until the position is filled. Applicants must submit a cover letter highlighting scholarly activities; a vita; a writing sample; evidence of teaching excellence; and contact information for three letter writers. Questions about the position may be directed to Professor Robin E. Jensen, Search Committee Chair, at r.e.jensen@utah.edu.
