Job Description


Barr Engineering Co. is seeking an environmental scientist to join its Minneapolis office and undertake challenging and fast-paced work on environmental impact assessment, permitting, and compliance projects. Work may include conducting environmental reviews; communicating with regulatory agencies and client contacts; developing and reviewing environmental permit applications; conducting wetland delineations, inventories, and functional assessments; participating in other field studies; performing desktop threatened and endangered species reviews; and reviewing field reports to verify environmental compliance. The person chosen for this position will work with other Barr staff, regulatory staff, clients, and subcontractors. The work may involve short-term, out-of-town assignments in the field or another office.

NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and require entering and working within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste-disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS or BA degree in environmental science/studies/policy, ecology, biology, botany, or a related field
  • MS degree in environmental science/studies/policy, ecology, biology, botany, or a related field or two years of relevant post-undergraduate experience
  • Writing and communication skills
  • Proficiency with GIS tools
  • Flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs
  • Exceptional task management skills, including scheduling, prioritizing, and following-up
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong Computer skills (MS Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to collaborate with local, state, and federal regulators
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three to five years of relevant post-undergraduate experience
  • Advanced degree in related area or specialized experience in the fields of ecology or natural resources
  • Environmental consulting or regulatory agency work experience
  • Wisconsin DNR certification to complete Natural Heritage Inventory reviews
  • Experience with the following:
    • State and federal environmental regulations, permitting processes (including EAW and EIS), or field compliance for utility corridor projects
    • Wetland delineation, wetland assessments, wetland restoration design and construction, and restoration project contracting and management
    • State and federal endangered species programs
    • Soil erosion and sedimentation control plans, construction stormwater plans, and site restoration plans
