We are actively looking for an Environmental Planner to support multiple projects in the Virginia/DC and Georgia markets, but based in our Virginia or DC office. In this role, you support complex planning and environmental impact statement projects in our Transportation organization. You will be involved in technical analysis and documentation, creation of GIS data files and mapping, management of budget and schedule, and client communication.
Performs various assignments requiring conventional planning expertise, but typically include complexities such as conflicting planning requirements and/or difficult coordination requirements. Gathers, compiles, and analyzes data on economic, social, and physical factors affecting land use. Collecting and assembling data in support of transportation planning and environmental analyses using GIS-based sources and systems. Preparation of transportation planning and environmental (NEPA) documents. Confers with local authorities, civic leaders, social scientists, and land planning and development specialists to devise and recommend arrangements of land and physical facilities for residential, commercial, transportation, industrial, and community uses. Develops recommendations based on governmental measures affecting land use, public utilities, community facilities, housing, and transportation to control and guide community development and renewal. Prepares, coordinates, and facilitates public involvement and consensus-building meetings and workshops. Prepares, reviews and evaluates environmental impact reports and other technical documents. May coordinate the work of technicians and/or lower-level Planners. Specific responsibilities will vary according to individual’s skills and desires. Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.
Bachelor’s degree in Urban/Environmental Planning or Environmental Sciences, Master’s degree preferred 3+ years of related work experience in environmental planning for transportation programs. Knowledge of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process, federal and state regulations (Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC) desirable. Strong writing and verbal skills required. Proficiency in utilizing GIS and various software packages typically used in urban/environmental planning assignments is required.
Willingness, desire and enthusiasm to work in a team setting that emphasizes teamwork, and support as well as leadership skills are essential skills. Knowledge of urban/environmental planning concepts, practices and procedures and NEPA process is required. Desire and ability to manage different projects, tasks, and work with other staffers simultaneously is strongly desired. This position also requires excellent written and oral communication skills. The candidate should be resourceful in developing and implementing innovative and creative solutions to technical, budgeting, and management tasks. Willing to create own solutions to challenges to ensure work is completed by the project team.
