Job Description

Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund are hiring a campaign organizer to help develop and implement the organization’s environmental initiatives in Northern Virginia and statewide while also working in our Washington DC field canvass. We seek an energetic and experienced organizer who will work within a leadership team to spearhead our environmental campaigns. The Campaign Associate will be required to initially fund their salary, tax and fringe benefits with funds canvassed in the Washington DC field canvass, and, working with the Chesapeake Regional Director, develop grant funding for the position over the long-term.  Clean Water Action is a national citizens’ organization working for clean, safe, affordable water, prevention of health threatening pollution, creation of environmentally safe jobs and businesses, and empowerment of people to make democracy work. Clean Water Action has 1 million members in 18 states and the District of Columbia, and over 165,000 members in the Chesapeake region.

The Virginia Campaign Associate will:

  • Conduct grassroots organizing and fundraising as part of the Washington DC field canvass, meeting canvass standards and fundraising standards for the position
  • Assist the Washington DC Field Canvass Director with staff training and leadership development, crew management, fiduciary responsibilities, and other related tasks
  • Organize issue campaigns in Northern Virginia in conjunction with the Chesapeake Program Coordinator; where appropriate, participate in lobbying activities with the Virginia General Assembly and other local jurisdictions
  • Assist on statewide and national campaign activities as directed
  • Draft internal and external communications for multiple audiences, including staff, other organizations, policymakers and traditional and social media
  • Help coordinate election related activities in Northern Virginia and elsewhere as directed
  • Draft outreach materials and membership email blasts, coordinate outreach and mobilization of Clean Water Action members in VA
  • Organize phone banks, petition drives, volunteer nights, and earned media events
  • Make public presentations, present testimony, and meet with public officials
  • Help coordinate election related activities in Northern VA and elsewhere as directed
  • Provide briefings, materials, and support to Clean Water’s field and phone canvasses
  • Help fundraise to support campaign activities
  • Carry out other activities as directed


  • Field or phone canvass experience required with a track record of successful fundraising
  • One to three years of successful professional field and on-line organizing experience, including experience leading an environmental, social justice or election campaign
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; experience preparing and delivering public presentations; ability to articulate campaign messages to the media and public officials
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with diverse groups
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and problem-solve in fast paced, dynamic work environment; well organized and self motivated
  • Research and strong critical thinking skills; computer skills; social media skills; experience with voter files
  • Willing to take feedback and direction
  • Must be willing and able to travel within Virginia, available  for evenings and weekends as needed
  • Knowledge of Virginia issues and leaders preferred; other Virginia organizing and policy experience considered
  • Spanish language skills a plus
