Description of Work


Recruitment Range: $31,200 - $45,419 GN06

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians.  The Department employs approximately 2000 employees.

Assistant County Ranger works with County Ranger to administer the County program.  Adherence to all safety policies, wildfire control, insect and disease control, fire training with fire department, function as Initial Attack incident commander or other positions for emergency response, forest fires, and natural disasters, collect forest measurements, inspect tree planting and site preparation work, measure areas for cost-share programs, and other related duties, conduct fire prevention and forest management programs for schools civic groups, and others,  investigate forest fires and take appropriate action based on the reason behind the cause, inspect land disturbing activities and insure adherence to Forest Practices Guidelines related to Water Quality.
Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pests, intense heat, dust, smoke and hazardous debris. Work hours are typically 8-5 M-F.  Some work functions require after hours, holiday and/or weekend work.  Wildfire and emergency response requires year round readiness 24 hrs/day, 7 days/week.  Overnight travel sometimes required.  Must be able to be on-call 24 hours/day, 7 days per week during high fire danger periods and during times of natural disasters. 
Residency required within 30 minutes of the NCFS County Headquarters located at 1305 Fire Ranger Way, Dallas, NC 28034 is required.

A proficiency test may be given.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Knowledge of forest management or wildland fire suppression or using GPS/GIS software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize task to accomplish goals
  • Must be able to walk rugged terrain over long periods of time and perform fire suppression or activities.
  • Occasional heavy lifting required.
  • Must be self-motivated, a team player and able to remain calm under stress.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate s degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related experience in providing forestry services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver s license required within 90 days of hire.
