Job Description

Location: San Diego, Boston or Remote
Reports To: Sierra Club Director of Clean Transportation for All campaign
Duration: 15 - 25 hours / week for 9-14 weeks beginning August and ideally through mid-October

Context: This paid internship supports the Director and national Campaign Representative in outreaching to members and supporters engaged in clean transportation advocacy.  Helps track electric vehicle sales and media coverage. Updates our online EV Guide, conducts research for blog posts, reports, and fundraising opportunities. Works with campaign staff and coalition partners in the planning, organizing, and marketing of National Drive Electric Week, which is September 8-16, 2018.

Scope: This position will provide insight into model policies that advance clean transportation at the state and local level; present opportunities to collaborate creatively and successfully with diverse stakeholders, including public officials, transit agencies and the public. Skills in strategic outreach and communications will be strengthened, as well as ability to research, track data, and coordinate both grassroots and high-level events.  


Job Activities:

  1. Works with the campaign Director and Representative to conduct research, educate the public and mobilize supporters to advance zero emission transportation policy.
  2. Tracks data and reports results.
  3. Provides research and drafts for blog articles, social media, and LTEs.
  4. Communicates with staff, members, and volunteers by writing and editing content, responding to members, forwarding inquiries to other staff or volunteers, and providing a high level of professional engagement.
  5. Helps with National Drive Electric Week through outreach, volunteer engagement, event organizer tools, etc.
  6. Helps evaluate and organize our electric vehicle driver/shopper stories for promotion.
  7. Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Familiarity in advocacy, public policy or political campaign organizing.
  • Proficient computer skills and prior experience or aptitude with internet applications including email, Google Docs, social networking systems and web applications.
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills. Demonstrated skills in writing and data management skills. Good verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively in an action-oriented office.
  • Ability to work independently, cooperatively and effectively with public, staff and volunteers.
