Summary of Functions

 The Forestry Technician II provides direct assistance to the Fire Captain to carry out day to day forestry activities and projects, as assigned by the Forestry Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Fire Captain with daily forestry activities such as timber inventories, cruises, sales, sales, land sales and forest management studies.
  • Assists with contacting tribal members/leaders, logging contractors or purchasers, inter-agency personnel, allotees, tribal department personnel or the general public concerning forestry projects.
  • Assists with lining out daily forest clearing and thinning projects or camp crew assignments in the absence of Forester.
  • Participates in tree planting, timber stand improvement and seed collecting as assigned.
  • Operates pick-up truck(s) or other assigned vehicles.
  • Participates in fire suppression and pre-suppression programs as assigned.
  • Insures the safe operation, maintenance and security of vehicles, tools and equipment (chainsaws, weed eaters, ect.) as assigned.
  • WUII work including thinning, weed whacking and piling brush.

Work Environment

  • This position requires the ability to bend, stoop, lift, carry and move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • This position requires significant amounts of standing or walking.
  • This position may require occasional local travel.
  • This position requires the ability to safely operate motor vehicles and equipment.
  • This position may require occasional overtime.
  • This position may require work to be performed outside general business hours.
  • Significant shift work or on-call status may be required.



High School or better in High School/General Educa.



•Required at least two years of forestry/fire field work background or related experience.

•Each additional education degree will be counted as two years of experience.

•Ability to learn the proper use of forestry instruments such as clinometer, hand compass, diameter tape and polycorder.

•Ability to take direction, work with minimum supervision and work with public.

•Ability and willingness to perform strenuous physical tasks in all types of weather conditions including firefighting on the reservation.

•Must be able to walk long distances through dense brush or timber.

•Willingness to attend and successfully complete related training.
