Job Role Summary 

The ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company (URC) in Spring, Texas has an immediate opening for an experienced Water Resources Management Specialist in its Environmental & Sustainability Technology group.  The Environmental & Sustainability Technology group is a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers who work closely with the business units to discover, develop, and deploy cutting-edge environmental technologies.  The incumbent will work on a variety of water resources management challenges, ranging from water sourcing for Upstream operations, to water treatment for reuse/recycle, through the lifecycle to disposal and management of produced water. 
The position requires the incumbent to:

  • Review, investigate and understand current upstream water management challenges
  • Create, develop and implement field applications with innovative solutions

Successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in partnership with researchers, scientists, and engineers across the organization as well as with external collaborators/ technical groups in trade associations.

Job Role Responsibilities 

  • Perform state-of-the-art research in upstream oil & gas water resources management & engineering
  • Develop research strategies for water sustainability in upstream operations
  • Develop and conduct conceptual feasibility studies for new research areas
  • Identify, assess, and evaluate technologies for water resource management, including third-party developed technologies, and work with developers to enhance and adapt them to meet ExxonMobil’s needs
  • Execute and manage projects and field research programs through team collaborations
  • Review and/or contribute to technical reports and publications
  • Communicate and present research internally and externally
  • Provide technical support to production units
  • Research areas include:
    • Sourcing and availability of ground and surface water for upstream operations (including modeling & data analysis)
    • Water treatment technologies for water reuse/recycle such as for unconventional operations
    • Water resource management planning for long-term sustainability
    • Produced water management & disposal
    • Watershed-level approaches for water resource management
    • Environmental risk assessments

Required Qualifications and Experience 

  • Graduate-level training and/or research in an engineering or interdisciplinary science discipline relevant to water resources management (water resources or environmental engineer, environmental scientist, or a related discipline) (PhD preferred)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of technical and non-technical individuals in a diverse community
  • The desire to grow knowledge and expand into new technical areas, and work across disciplines and organizations. 

Preferred Qualifications and Experience 

  • A minimum of 3 years of previous industrial experience preferred
  • Basic understanding of current global water resource regulations, economic analysis involving water management preferred
  • Experience with water treatment technology, data, models, and software packages relating to water resources management and engineering design preferred
  • Previous experience in coordinating and managing industrial projects preferred
