Program Overview

To stop deforestation, we need to know where it is happening and who is responsible in time to take action. Global Forest Watch (GFW) is the only free online platform providing near-real time information and analysis about when, where and why forests are changing around the world.

Global Forest Watch uses machine learning algorithms and expert analysis to distill satellite imagery, crowdsourced information, and hundreds of open datasets into actionable insights and policy-relevant information about forests worldwide. GFW’s online platform is simple to use, allowing anyone with an internet connection or mobile phone to access data, create dynamic maps, and produce custom analyses with just a few clicks.

Designed for action, Global Forest Watch enables researchers, government officials, companies, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens anywhere to make better-informed decisions about managing and conserving forests.

Job Summary

We are searching for a skilled writer/editor to support Global Forest Watch. This position will work with GFW experts and partners to develop and edit data-driven stories. A key part of the job is oversight of the Global Forest Watch blog, which publishes stories and analyses about forest monitoring and management. The position will also produce content for GFW’s social media accounts, as well as write copy and do basic graphic design for marketing materials. The junior writer/ editor will report to GFW’s External Relations Specialist, along with GFW’s Community Engagement & Product Marketing Specialist.

Job Responsibilities

The junior writer/editor’s main areas of responsibility will include the following:

Editing and Writing (60%):

  • Oversee the day to day production of GFW blogs and editorial content by conceptualizing, writing and editing data-driven stories and multimedia content. Solicit research findings and new analyses from GFW staff and partners and turn complex research findings into clever, compelling prose. Help develop key messages from research findings.
  • Support the GFW blog (globalforestwatch.org) by posting and updating content, producing analytics to determine trends in blog readership, identifying actions to expand our audience, and assisting with overall blog strategy.
  • Write copy for GFW marketing materials, such as brochures, postcards, and web pages.
  • Develop content for GFW newsletters and email marketing campaigns.
  • Manage translations of GFW materials into our key languages by working with translation vendors.
  • Support GFW’s “Global Forests Update,” a forthcoming major report on the state of the world’s forests.
  • Tell stories about how recipients of GFW’s Small Grants Fund are using data and technology to defend and manage forests.

Social Media (25%):

  • Support daily activity for GFW’s Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts by developing social media copy, graphics, and video.
  • Work with GFW partners and related platforms to cross-promote content.

Other Communications (15%):

  • Work with graphic designers and data visualization specialists to develop key visual content, both static and interactive. Occasionally support video production.
  • Assist with the creation of related web content, outreach materials, newsletters, and fundraising materials, as needed.
  • Support GFW’s community engagement efforts by helping to manage our lists of contacts in constituent relationship management (CRM) software like Pardot and Salesforce.
  • Occasional support for events (particularly developing compelling PowerPoint presentations, talking points, etc.).
  • Collaborate closely with WRI’s Core Communications team and communication staff across the Institute, especially the organization’s Editorial Manager and Editor/Content Specialist.

Job Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field
  • 1+ years of relevant, full-time experience in scientific communications or journalism
  • Prior experience managing a blog, web channel, or institutional social media accounts
  • Familiarity with web development and design (especially managing content in WordPress)
  • Demonstrated experience or expertise in writing on science, environment, or international development issues
  • High degree of comfort exploring and working with data though visual analysis or other means
  • Understanding of the media landscape and storytelling trends
  • Experience writing/producing graphic and interactive features
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-starter who is comfortable leading projects from start to finish

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with data journalism, online content development or similar experience strongly desired
  • Experience working for a journalistic publication or newsroom
  • Advanced language skills in French, Spanish, Portuguese or Bahasa Indonesia a major plus
  • Proficiency with GIS or statistical software (e.g., R) a bonus
  • Strong social media skills
