Job Description


This position is part of the Uvalde National Fish Hatchery. As a Biological Science Technician you will be responsible for planning and carrying out daily aquatic animal husbandry duties such as, but not limited to, specimen collection, aquatic holding system design, construction, and maintenance, feeding, breeding, and rearing aquatic species, implementation of standard biosecurity and health practices including disease treatment if needed.

This is a Term appointment, not-to-exceed 13 months, which can be extended for a total appointment of 4 years.

Duties of the incumbent include:

  • Assisting in aquatic nuisance species monitoring and control at the Center and in the field.
  • Operating a variety of field equipment commonly used in research studies, including, water quality measuring equipment, fish, salamander, and invertebrate sampling gear, cars, pickup trucks, and non-motorized boats.
  • Provide work direction and guidance to volunteers, or students in gathering data, including safe handling of tools and operation of motorized vehicles.
  • Assist the lead biologist in preparing drafts of news releases for area media, and presenting informational or educational programs to individuals, local organizations, established Friends Group, and school classes.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
The employee endures periods of prolonged standing, walking, stooping, and bending. The employee is required to lift, carry, and set up equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Work commonly requires considerable exertion when walking over wet, muddy, rough, uneven, and rocky surfaces. The work is performed outdoors and in an office setting. Temperature and weather extremes are encountered in outdoor work. The employee is expected to perform duties in a safe and responsible manner to avoid endangering self, coworkers, or property.

Occasional travel - Occasional travel to attend training, meetings, conferences, etc.
