The City of Gresham is excited to announce an opportunity for a Sustainability Internship in our Recycling and Solid Waste Division of Environmental Services. Successful candidates will be current college students majoring in Engineering, Public Administration, Business Administration, Sustainability, Environmental Services, or any other related programs.
The City of Gresham's Internal Sustainability Operations Plan is a broad action plan, supported by the Mayor and Gresham City Council, to ensure the City of Gresham and the community is prepared for the challenges of today and the opportunities for tomorrow. The City formally committed to advancing sustainability in 2007 with Mayor Shane Bemis' signature of the US Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. The Sustainability Policy, passed by City Council in 2009, provides the guiding sustainability principles for the City. This effort, coupled with a 2009 baseline greenhouse gas assessment for the City operations and facilities, laid the foundation for the Sustainable Gresham Initiative.
The start date for this position will be July 1st, 2018 and the last day will be December 31st. Work schedule to be negotiated during normal business hours. 32 hours per week during Summer term and a minimum 12 hours per week at the start of Fall term.
To continue our commitment towards sustainability, the City is looking for an intern to help support the plan's key commitments, which included the development of an Energy Management Plan, development of a Green Fleet and Fuel Policy, and development of a Sustainable Purchasing Policy and Guidelines. While in various stages of development or implementation, these key commitments can be further advanced with help from this position.
The Sustainability Intern's primary responsibility will be to provide data collection activities to update the City's 2012 Operational Greenhouse Gas Inventory. The intern will conduct quality control on received data, input information into existing spreadsheets or calculators, and support the development of a GHG progress report.
The Intern will also support program implementation planning and research on the City's current goals, commitments and targets referenced in the Internal Operations & Facilities Sustainability Plan as time allows. This opportunity will provide additional hands-on experience working with City staff on assessing sustainable operating actions that impact the triple bottom line.
Knowledge of: Sustainability, materials management, waste reduction and resource conservation principles; concepts of sustainability as applied in communities and in businesses; systems thinking using the triple bottom line and other sustainability frameworks, resource conservation, or energy (efficiency & renewable); principles, practices and techniques of research, planning, and project management.
Working Knowledge of: Experience working with large spreadsheets; principles, practices and techniques of project management; current trends and methods related to sustainability, sustainable business and materials management; best practices for this area; English grammar and composition.
Skill to: Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; evaluate complex problems and devise solutions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups; lead the development and implementation of projects; proficiently utilize Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint (intermediate or advanced level); prepare and deliver presentations to various audiences.
Candidate must be a Junior or Senior in college by Fall 2018
A current graduate student pursuing a Master's degree
This position requires that you are currently a registered and enrolled student and that you will not have graduated before August 2018. You do not need to be enrolled in summer term. The internship is available only for students who have not yet graduated.
