The Position

Vacancy Situation:The Park District currently has several vacancies located throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties.  Field Interns may work full-time (40 hours/week) for up to 90 days, or part-time (less than 30 hours/week) if the assignment is longer than 90 days.  Maximum internship length is 600 hours.  Positions in this classification often include public contact and therefore bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

Under direction of the supervisor, the Field Intern assists with and performs unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance and other tasks on Park District properties and facilities.

Essential Functions

As part of an internship program, a Field Intern works on various projects under the direction of and as assigned by the supervisor:

  • assists and performs grounds maintenance tasks
  • assists and executes the maintenance of trails, trail heads, staging areas and Park District buildings
  • assists and completes administrative tasks, such as ordering and purchasing supplies
  • becomes familiar with Park District policies and practices along with the reasoning behind these procedures
  • gains insight into being an effective decision-maker within the context of projected career goals
  • develops the ability to use good judgment in situations presented
  • analyzes situations and facts pertaining to assigned project 

Other Functions and Duties

  • may assist with directing emergency response vehicles and may assist with communications during emergency situations
  • performs related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, and

Current Educational Status:  Must be enrolled in a Community College or Vocational School, and License:  Must possess a valid California driver's license.  

Additional Information

Field Interns must also have the ability to:

  • frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds
  • communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service to internal and external customers
  • perform basic mathematical computations
  • work outside and under adverse working conditions
  • follow written and oral instructions
  • operate the use of office equipment, such as a personal computer

Conditions of Employment:
Field Interns may be required to work unusual hours, weekends, and holidays.
