About the opportunity

The Chicago office of SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding our team and looking for a dynamic individual with experience as a Sr. NEPA Consultant.  The ideal candidate will possess a strong skillset in consulting and project management, particularly environmental planning and NEPA compliance.  This is a part-time, temporary, hourly position reporting to a Director or Principal-level position. 

What you will accomplish

As a core member of the Natural Resources Program, responsibilities will include but not limited to: 

  • Manage project requirements related to National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and other resource planning/permitting, and/or natural resource disciplines
  • Serve as project manager for a variety of NEPA documents for conservation, planning, and development projects
  • Manage interdisciplinary projects including budgets, technical staff, and reports related to NEPA compliance documents, particularly Environmental Assessments (EA) and Environmental Impact Statements (EIS)
  • Secondary expertise in natural resource disciplines relevant in the Rocky Mountain and High Plains
  • Manage diverse NEPA projects, including oil and gas, water resources, renewable energy, transmission, and transportation-related projects
  • Manage large proposal efforts for EIS and EA projects for various agencies as well as applicants and proponents
  • Conduct business development and marketing geared toward winning NEPA and planning projects
  • Expand SWCA's professional relationship with Federal agencies
  • Assist in strategic planning and positioning of SWCA's services
  • Mentor junior planning staff in NEPA and environmental planning
  • Contribute to expanding SWCA's professional reputation and the development of scientific excellence in natural resource consulting and research
  • Work closely with SWCA's project managers, directors, and principals throughout the company to promote SWCA's business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and values.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental planning, environmental science, biology or a related field
  • Five to 10 years of experience preparing and managing NEPA documents required (or similar levels of experience in report completion, as well as scheduling and budgeting of projects)
  • Demonstrated experience managing large NEPA and planning projects with excellent developer and agency references
  • Experience working with Department of Interior (DOI) NEPA protocols and requirements, including for Bureau of Reclamation, National Park Service, and Bureau of Land Management
  • Experience working with agencies directly as well as project applicants and proponents with NEPA documentation guidance and review
  • Experience working with Bureau of Land Management National Project Managers
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and staff
  • Excellent organizational, oral, written and analytical skills are required
  • Experience teaching NEPA-related workshops or trainings
