Job Description


This position serves as a standard wildland fire management position located on a wildland fire crew. The primary purpose of this position is to perform wildland firefighting work. These crews perform work directly related to wildland fire suppression and control activities. May also perform duties in other fuels related or ecosystem restoration projects. 

This position is located in Region 2 Bighorn National Forest on the Medicine Wheel Ranger District in Greybull, WY. 
The incumbent will be guaranteed 13 pay periods of full-time work. However, there may be a possibility to work more. You will then be placed in non-pay / non-duty status for the remainder of the year.

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

Serves as an experienced firefighter on a hand crew or other related fire suppression crews performing fire suppression and/or fuels management duties under the most adverse conditions of climate, fuels, and terrain. 

Performs all aspects of wildland and prescribed fire operations (e.g preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop up). 

Collects fire weather data, fuel and/or soil moisture samples, maps projects, and maintains records.Responsible for operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland and prescribed fire situations.  

Oral communication skills sufficient to effectively interact with people at all levels, internal and external to the organization, including the public. 

May be assigned to fire lookout to provide detection and reporting of wildfires. 
Performs the full range of standardized forestry support duties for fire, timber, silviculture, recreation, wilderness, or research activities. May perform project work such as road and trail maintenance, habitat manipulation, and miscellaneous equipment and facilities maintenance. 

Performs project work such as fuel inventory and hazard fuel reduction projects.  Duties listed are at the full performance level.

Travel Required

75% or less - Overnight travel will be required for fire suppression or fire related assignments.
