This position will offer opportunities to observe participate in and conduct environmental education and outdoor skill programs, and public information activities. The assistant naturalist will assume assigned tasks of increasing responsibility. This position is under direct authority of County Conservation Naturalist


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
The following duties are typical for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  

Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Assist naturalist staff with planning and conducting environmental education and outdoor skill programs for a wide range of audiences, including school children and summer youth programs
  • Plan and conduct public education programs and special events
  • Nature Center staffing
  • Social media
  • Maintain good working relationships with other employees and the public
  • Attend mandatory safety training, and staff meetings
  • Assist with center host duties as assigned
  • Attendance is required

Non-Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provides assistance with a variety of duties within scope of responsibility assigned by County Conservation Naturalist

Required Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience Required to Perform Essential Functions:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent. Bachelor's or Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in environmental education, interpretation, recreation, ecology, or related earth biological science, and experience in development and presentation of environmental or interpretive program preferred
  • Applicants must have the ability to obtain/maintain a valid motor vehicle license issued by the State of Iowa and have a safe driving record
  • Ability to get to and from the work-site;
  • Ability to use hand and small power tools
  • Physically able to work in extreme environmentally rigorous situations (heat, humidity, steep terrain)
  • Must have computer and basic writing skills
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public, maintain good working relationships and express ideas effectively orally and in writing.
  • Candidate must pass physical and drug screening tests prior to employment for Woodbury County
  • Candidate must pass background check in refer to their driving record, criminal history, and child abuse registry
