Job Description

Rainforest Trust seeks a Latin America Conservation Director to develop and manage a growing team of conservation officers managing a portfolio of conservation projects with our in-country partners across the region. Rainforest Trust is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in 1988. Partnering with the most respected conservation organizations in the world’s tropical regions, Rainforest Trust supports the protection of critical habitat for endangered species through local partnership. To date, we have saved over 18 million tropical habitat acres. We are an efficient organization, earning the top 4-star rating from Charity Navigator. The successful candidate for the Latin America Conservation Director will work under the supervision of the Chief Conservation Officer.

Duties Include:

  • Develop and lead the implementation of a strategic approach to the protection of key sites for threatened fauna and flora throughout Latin America.
  • Supervise a team of Latin America Program Officers and Associates managing a diverse portfolio of protected area projects.
  • Participate in a Conservation Department management team with the Chief Conservation Officer and other regional division directors.
  • Guide priority setting to help identify future project sites.
  • Cultivate inter-institutional relationships to enhance Rainforest Trusts’ effectiveness and to leverage Rainforest Trust resources.
  • Manage and track implementation of Rainforest Trust protected area projects to ensure projects are on track, sustainable and partners are fully engaged.
  • Participate actively with Development and Communications staff in project fundraising and communication efforts.

Qualifications:

  • A personal passion for biodiversity conservation and belief in Rainforest Trust’s conservation mission.
  • A degree in biological or environmental sciences, or combination of education and experience. Graduate degree a plus.
  • Proven knowledge and experience of conservation and protected areas creation and management throughout Latin America.
  • A talent for program management. An outgoing, positive, persuasive manner and predisposition for collaboration. Demonstrable success in managing programs, effectively advancing multiple projects at the same time, and completing complex projects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the general public, conservationists, scientists, and Rainforest Trust partner organizations, often in cross-cultural situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English required.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Spanish required; Portuguese a plus.
  • Experience managing and administering grants, either as a recipient or grantor.
  • Experience with database management a plus.
  • Experience in fundraising for conservation projects and associated network a plus.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US.
