Internship- Paid Advocacy and Policy Climate Change/ Resiliency Communication - Public Outreach

Job Description

The Position

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit whose scientists and engineers work to solve some of our planet’s most pressing environmental and safety problems. UCS combines technical analysis and effective organizing and advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for stemming the tide of global warming, sustainable food policy and agriculture, energy and transportation, fighting misinformation and reducing the threat of catastrophic nuclear war.

At the Center for Science and Democracy (The Center), we value contributions by everyone on the team. We work hard and have fun while contributing to making the world a better place. We are supporting scientists so they can speak up and use their experience and expertise so that the policies that keep us and our environment healthy are informed by evidence and the public as opposed to industry and special interests. Help us help scientists to be better prepared to contribute to policy, work with community partners, and to speak and act on their knowledge for the public good. Let’s stand up for science and push back against the anti-science, alternative facts movement.

Responsibilities

The Outreach Assistant Intern will conduct the following activities in support of The Center’s development of a suite of resources, trainings, and action opportunities for scientists to engage in advocacy:

  • Help develop promotional and other educational materials for engagement, including member communications to better identify and cultivate advocates
  • Assist with onboarding and support activities for Science and Democracy Fellows
  • Help implement action opportunities for experts to deepen their engagement to defend science
  • Identify and help cultivate experts to serve as connectors or leaders to ensure The Center’s organizing efforts and resources serve as an asset
  • Provide logistical support for and help facilitate webinars, meetings, and trainings, to recruit, cultivate, and educate experts
  • Help develop the website and social media presence
  • Assist the team in collaborating with other UCS campaigns
  • Help maintain tracking and evaluation of effectiveness and impacts
  • Assist in identifying opportunities for promoting and collaborating with partners on resources and trainings
  • Work with our leadership, outreach, research, and legislative teams, and provide input in all areas of the Center’s work!

Qualifications and Experience

  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective communication and relationship building with diverse audiences
  • Experience in event planning, information management, and task organization
  • Knowledge of office and administrative support procedures
  • MS Word and Excel proficiency
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Willing to look at the work through a racial justice and equity lens

Little or no exertion; will require extended periods at a computer. Candidate will be required to travel occasionally to meetings (approximately 3-5 overnights).

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

UCS is an equal opportunity employer continually seeking to diversify its staff. In particular, we’re dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We’re also committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds can thrive. We've adopted this commitment because we believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities. We are actively seeking people who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to join us in this work.

Compensation, Hours and Location:

This is a full-time, 9-month, paid internship based in UCS’s Cambridge, MA office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is around $34,320. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
