Job Description

CSRA’s Science & Engineering group has an immediate position for a qualified candidate to provide support, for records, data, and sample management, including inventory tracking, on a contract providing mission support to environmental monitoring projects for the EPA’s Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO).  This is a part-time role located at the client site in Chicago, IL.


Biology Samples Duties:

  • Complete an inventory of existing environmental monitoring samples collected to evaluate the ecological health of the Great Lakes (in Chicago and Milwaukee)
  • Maintain a Biology Sample Inventory File (currently in MS Excel) including sample description and location (room, box, and shelf)
  • Write progress report
  • Assist with boxing and proper handling of samples
  • Participate in moving the biology samples to Milwaukee following specified chain-of-custody procedures
  • Assist with development of procedures for managing the biology sample inventory

Records Management Duties:

  • Maintain the Science Records Inventory File (currently in MS Excel) including record description and location (room, shelf, and box)
  • Assist with development of procedures for managing approximately 200 boxes of science records
  • Inventory and categorize science records according to the developed procedures
  • Manage and track the disposition decision process for all records
  • Scan, verify, and upload files into a SharePoint site
  • Write progress reports and summarize record contents


Required Skills and Experience   

  • Bachelor’s degree related to Environmental Science (Chemistry, Ecology, Biology, Natural Resources, or related fields)
  • One to two years in data, records, and sample management activities including inventory tracking and updating databases
  • Experience in developing and implementing standard operating procedures
  • Experience handling environmental samples or working in a laboratory
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, and communication skills
  • Demonstrates professionalism, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills
  • Manages own time and works with limited supervision

Additional Position Details

  • Physical labor will be involved such as lifting boxes weighing up to 30 pounds onto shelves up to five feet high
  • Some overnight travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin is likely
