Job Description

This is a temporary (6-month), full-time (40 hours/week) internship for a college graduate interested in the areas of solid waste management. This internship position functions in a staff-level capacity as part of the Environmental Initiatives (EI) Unit of the Environmental Resources Department at the Western Service Center in Apple Valley, MN.

The intern will assist EI Unit staff in solid waste management projects and programs, including: research for organics recycling (e.g., low-waste events in park rental facilities, compostable product needs and availability, catering, food truck vendors); support for public event recycling (e.g., prioritizing, scheduling, gathering equipment and materials, providing onsite event assistance); support for the school recycling program (e.g., inventory and update existing school resources); inventory city and township burning ordinances; and support environmental education activities (e.g., update resources, coordinate and conduct environmental education).
Additional learning opportunities will occur through engagement in other Environmental Resources Department activities.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in an environmental field: physical or biological sciences; resource/waste management, environmental studies; environmental education/communication; environmental planning; or other related field.
• A valid Minnesota driver's license.

Duties & Responsibilities

These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.

  1. Assist EI Unit staff in solid waste management projects and programs.
  2. Assist with research and best practices development for organics recycling at park rental facilities.
  3. Assist with research to identify compostable product needs and availability for the school and event recycling programs.
  4. Assist in coordinating and implementing recycling and organics collection at public events.
  5. Review and update environmental education resources.
  6. Coordinate and conduct environmental education at public events.
  7. Assist with city and township burning ordinance inventory.
  8. Support school recycling program to inventory and update waste management resources.
  9. Participate in household hazardous waste collection days.
  10. Participate in field and office learning opportunities with other ERD program staff.Develop final internship report.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities and Work Environment

• Knowledge of waste management preferred.
• Experience driving a trailer preferred.
• Knowledge of waste management preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to:
