The Center is currently looking for a full-time Utah Field Campaigner for our Organizing Department. The Field Campaigner will work remotely, so the exact location (within Utah) is flexible.
General position overview:
The Utah Field Campaigner will work on mobilizing and engaging people in the state to resist environmental rollbacks and advocate for bold conservation initiatives. This is a grassroots organizing position that will manage statewide campaigns with a focus on advocating within the state toward stronger local and federal conservation policies. Additionally, the campaigner will engage and support our volunteer-based distributed organizing network, Ignite Change.
The Field Campaigner will grow and build our base of support in the state. This includes doing additional recruitment, relationship building, grasstops organizing, media work, identifying regional priorities aligned with Center programs, and executing offline campaign strategies.
- Identify opportunities and conservation priorities within the state.
- Develop strategic campaign plans in consultation with the organizing and conservation program directors.
- Manage and execute campaign plans to advance priority conservation issues.
- Recruit and grow volunteers, members, and supporters for the Center in the region.
- Maintain and enhance the Center's volunteer-based distributed organizing network, Ignite Change, including by participating in digital organizing and the management of volunteer teams.
- Support the Ignite Change network by developing a plan that enhances campaigns launched by the network in your state.
- Build alliances with local community groups and strategic national groups to advocate and educate local and federal decision makers.
- Organize rallies, protests, creative actions and other events.
- Engage in public speaking at rallies, press conferences, public hearings and other events.
- Provide opportunities, training and support for volunteers.
- Track, analyze and advocate regarding state legislation.
- Prepare communications such as press releases, op-eds, fact sheets and white papers.
- Be prepared for some required travel.
Essential qualities, qualifications and skills desired:
- An undergraduate degree (or equivalent work experience) and at least three years of grassroots and/or campaign organizing experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate well with team members and volunteers.
- A proven ability to produce clear, concise, persuasive and powerful writing on tight deadlines.
- A track record of being a good teammate and colleague. We value teamwork and expect each member of the team to have a "can do" attitude and a willingness to help whenever and wherever needed.
- Amenability regarding working weekend and nighttime hours.
- Comfort working in a remote office. You will interact with your coworkers and with volunteers primarily via Slack, video chat and phone calls. Enjoy working in a dynamic, fast-paced workplace where no day is the same and you don't always know what will happen next week.
- Competency in writing. You don't need to be a poet, but you can churn out clearly written, mostly error-free copy on a tight deadline.
- Commitment to winning. To us that means being accountable for outcomes, being willing to test your ideas against reality and adapt if your approach isn't working, and being willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish our goals.
- Eagerness to take a hands-on approach. We expect everyone on our team to regularly do every task that we ask volunteers to do. Ours is not a team for "ideas people" or anyone who is unwilling to personally dive in to manually solve messy, complex, difficult problems.
- Experience with campaign planning and strategy.
- Experience lobbying at the federal or state level preferred.
- Familiarity with social media and digital organizing tools.
- Experience with digital tools like Relay, Slack, ActionKit, Maestro, Help Scout.
- Proven expertise in CRM tools like ActionKit and EveryAction.
- Experience in grassroots and/or political organizing.
- The ability to juggle multiple projects and multiple deadlines.
- A passion for and knowledge of the natural world, biodiversity, wildlife and waters.
- A demonstrated commitment to environmental protection, diversity and justice.
