Job Description

Job Overview

The Senior Forester is responsible for the day-to-day management and growth of the SCS Forest Conservation Program services in Canada. Areas of responsibility include new business development, account management and operations, and auditing. 

Relevant Services/Schemes

  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
  • Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and PEFC endorsed schemes (SFI and CSA)
  • Green House Gas verification standards, such as British Columbia Forest Compliance Offset Protocol, Climate Action Reserve, Verified Carbon Standard
  • Other as assigned 

Roles and Responsibilities

Business Development  

  • Identify business development opportunities for SCS program services in Canada
  • Work with Manager Director to develop and implement a business plan for Canada
  • Undertake outreach and marketing to recruit new clients for existing services and development of new business areas
  • Develop client proposals
  • Prepare and provide reports on program metrics and business development opportunities to the Managing Director and externally
  • Attend trainings, trade shows, conferences, and meetings as approved by Managing Director      

Account Management and Operations  

  • Work with the Managing Director and Program Directors to oversee program services in Canada
  • Serve as a primary interface for forestry clients in Canada
  • Prepare documentation related to assessments and auditing (e.g., work orders, contracts, proposals)
  • Organize and maintain records, client database, and Program quality system to ensure conformance with internal and external ISO/scheme-owner (e.g. FSC) requirements
  • Schedule and coordinate assessments/audits
  • Ensure client retention and strong client relations by providing high quality client support 


  • Conduct high quality audits as lead auditor or audit team member, and perform technical reviews, in accordance with applicable standards and guidelines
  • Oversee the performance of local auditors
  • Ensure audits are conducted in a timely and thorough manner 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline and graduate degree or equivalent professional work experience in relevant discipline
  • Exceptional organizational, writing, presentation and verbal communication skills
  • Initiative and ability to work independently; responsive and adaptive personality
  • Excellent technical writing and/or copy-editing skills; detail-oriented personality
  • Ability to handle complex and varied tasks, while working independently
  • Ability to complete time-sensitive projects and meet realistic deadlines
  • Fluent English: reading, writing, speaking
  • Fluency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and FileMaker Pro, with proficiency in other programs and database management systems preferred 

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Registered Professional Forester
  • Experience in international forestry
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS and familiarity with remote sensing applications
  • Proficient French: reading, writing, speaking
