Job Description

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), one of the first national organizations to introduce leadership skills in youth through conservation service to this country, is seeking a Senior Vice President of Programs.  The Senior Vice President will lead the national programs staff as they develop, deliver, and evaluate the impact of programs that provide youth the opportunity to improve their leadership skills through service to the country and its greatest natural legacy.

 

For sixty years, the Student Conservation Association has provided teens and young adults with opportunities to ignite an interest in leadership skills, connection to the outdoors, and access pathways to careers in conservation and service. SCA members work in all 50 states and territories, from national parks to big cities. As the world’s environment knows no boundaries, increasingly SCA members’ impact is advancing the momentum of global stewardship efforts. Research shows that as SCA develops and nurtures the future stewards of our lands, so too do they develop and nurture leaders for life.

 

Empowered by a recent increase in philanthropic partnerships, and inspired by the demonstrated impact that non-partisan participation in its programs has on youth, the new Senior Vice President will join the executive team as he/she/they operationalizes this focus in the four programming areas: Summer Community Crews, National Crews, Conservation Corps, and Conservation Internships. He/She/They will lead the national program staff of approximately 60 individuals - located in sites nationwide.  They will assist with the implementation of internal systems and practices that increase the societal and individual impact of SCA’s programs.  And they will enhance team effectiveness, deepening the collaboration between the programs staff and other teams across SCA. The new SVP will be a thought leader who elevates the identity of SCA in national, non-partisan conversations at the intersection of youth development and conservation. He/She/They will leverage this national role to build new partnerships with peer organizations, policymakers, and philanthropies.

 

The ideal candidate will first and foremost be committed to SCA’s mission, and have a demonstrated commitment to connecting people to programs that improve their skillsets, lives, and that give back to this country. He/She/They will have 12-15 years of regional or national programming experience in organizations that specialize in youth engagement in academics, conservation, skills-training, outdoor adventure, community engagement, or a related field. He/She/They will be a proven manager with expertise in talent development, internal communications, strategic planning, oversight of remote and on-site teams, operations, and contract execution. The new SVP will be an exceptional relationship builder with experience as an ambassador, and the ability to forge sustainable, cross-sector partnerships.

 

He/She/They will also be a strong, reliable internal partner with the creativity, energy, openness, and critical awareness to contribute to the vision and strategic direction of a large organization, while also leading a team of highly talented program staff into a period of increased performance, accountability, and collaboration.
