The Department of Public Works designs, builds, operates and maintains the City of Minneapolis' infrastructure, which includes but is not limited to: streets and bridges, public buildings, City fleet of vehicles, storm and sanitary sewer systems, drinking water treatment and distribution, parking ramps and surface lots, traffic signals, signage and striping, solid waste and recycling and more.
The Surface Water & Sewer Division of Public Works is responsible for planning, designing, operating, and maintaining the sanitary sewer and drainage systems within the City of Minneapolis.
The City is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill the following internship positions:
- 2 positions in Surface Water & Sewer Planning and Design
- 1, maybe 2 positions in Surface Water & Sewer GIS
Under immediate supervision, assist engineers and senior engineering technicians with various data entry projects - inclusive of geographic mapping, reporting, modeling, and updating of infrastructure improvements in spatial map.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:Surface Water & Sewer Planning and Design Interns (2 positions)
There are two fulltime planning and design intern positions available for Summer 2018 to assist engineers working on the city's flood mitigation, CSO and I/I Reduction Programs. The City will consider extending the position into Fall of 2018 for exceptional candidates. Work days and hours are flexible, but are limited to the days of Monday through Friday and within the hours of 7:00 am - 5:00 pm. Work site is located at the City of Lakes Building, 309 Second Avenue South, Minneapolis and may occasionally include field work.
Surface Water & Sewer GIS Intern (1 position)
There is one full-time Geographic Information System (GIS) intern position available in Summer 2018. City will consider additional part-time work Spring and Fall of 2018, if candidate is available full-time for the summer. Work days and hours are flexible, but are limited to the days of Monday through Friday and within the hours of 7:00 am - 5:00 pm. Work site is located at the Hiawatha Yard, 1901 26th Avenue South, Minneapolis.

By time of hire, must possess and continue to maintain valid driver's license.

Working conditions may vary depending on the division the intern is place in. Office setting with field work. Field work may include exposure to all weather conditions; exposure to outdoor elements such as loud noise, dust, dirt, gases, fumes and chemicals; exposure to high traffic areas; exposure to other types of conditions that may be found in a construction, plant or other hazardous location; exposure to rough, uneven and/or slippery surfaces; working in tunnels and/or other types of conditions that may be found in a construction environment; ability to work in confined space areas; ability to climb, maneuver and/or work on ladders, stairs, platforms and enter/exit manholes. Approximately 70% outdoor work, 30% indoor work.
