Job Description

VHB’s growing Massachusetts team is looking for a mid-level Environmental Scientist to join our growing environmental and energy practice in the state. VHB is specifically searching for a candidate who has previous experience completing natural resource assessments and local, state, and federal permitting for energy related projects in Massachusetts, such as electric transmission/distribution, natural gas transmission/distribution, and renewable energy generation.   

VHB’s passionate professionals include engineers, scientists, planners, and designers who partner with public and private clients in the transportation, real estate, institutional, and energy industries, as well as federal, state, and local governments.  As a team, we work to improve mobility, enhance communities and economic vitality, and balance development and infrastructure needs with environmental stewardship. 


  • Perform natural resource surveys including, but not limited to, wetland delineations and functional assessments, wildlife habitat evaluations and rare species surveys
  • Assist project managers with development of federal, state and local permit applications
  • Permit compliance monitoring
  • Preparation of various technical reports  

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Self-motivated with attention to detail
  • Ability to identify and/or key out northeast plant species
  • Ability to characterize soil profiles
  • Understanding of wetland regulations in MA is a necessary skill for this position  


  • B.S. in environmental science, natural resources, wetland science, or a related field
  • 3+ years of professional environmental consulting experience
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the wetland regulations in CT, MA and/or RI is a preferred
  • Must be comfortable working in physically challenging outdoor situations in all types of weather and traveling on a regular basis to project sites located in New England and the surrounding Northeastern U.S. region
  • Must have the ability to conduct tasks independently
  • Expertise in identifying either plants, insects, birds, reptiles, and/or amphibians a plus
