Tree of Heaven Ailanthus altissima is considered an invasive species in many parts of North America and it is also a preferred host to the recently discovered invasive pest species, the Spotted Lanternfly (SLF). If left untreated, Spotted Lanternfly could have substantial negative impacts on grape, orchard, and logging industries in the United States.   Position Description: This position involves interfacing between the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and property owners to create, permission, and execute site plans and treatment plans to apply pesticide to designated trees on private and public properties. The treatment of these trees is part of an effort by the United States Department of Agriculture to inhibit the spread of the Spotted Lanternfly. This position is currently a seasonal positon going from March 1st through November 30th, with the strong possibility of tranisitioning to a year round position.   Physically, the work requires the ability to correctly identify the designated trees slated for pesticide and/or insecticide treatment and to apply basal and foliar applications to these trees safely and according to the label. This work will occur along city streets, individual residences, woodlots and wetlands. Specific task training is provided.   Position Requirements :   A Virginia Pesticide Applicator Certification issued by the Virginia Department of Agriculture is strongly Preferred.  A two-year degree in forestry, urban forestry, horticulture, arboriculture, plant biology, conservation, or environmental science or related fields is preferred Excellent tree identification skills   Computer Proficiency is required since the work involves the use of advanced technology equipment such as hand-held computers, pen-tablet computers, GPS equipment and GIS tree management software. Ability to read and follow maps and to work independently Experience identifying damage in trees associated with the Spotted Lanternfly is a plus. A valid driver's license, good driving record Ability to work outside in all weather conditions around wildlife, in rugged terrain Excellent communication skills   Additional Information: Full time position. QUALIFICATIONS: Two or Four year degree in Forestry, Urban Forestry, Horticulture or related discipline a plus, but not required. Ability to identify local tree species and knowledge of growth rates. Properly identify and diagnose insects, weeds, fungus conditions, and pest prone areas. Communicate with and educate the client regarding the diagnosis and the prescribed pest control, and fertilization service with customers. Perform the prescribed fertilization and integrated pest management on tree and shrubs using spray and injection tools. Continuously monitor the pest control and fertilizing methods after application and communicate progress to customers and supervisors.
