Trail Crew Member DEPARTMENT: Stewardship POSITION TYPE: Full time / Hourly / Seasonal (June-August) REPORTS TO: Trail Crew Leader / Sanctuary Stewards / Director of Stewardship The mission of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association is to conserve birds of prey worldwide by providing leadership in raptor conservation science and education, and by maintaining Hawk Mountain Sanctuary as a model observation, research and education facility. PURPOSE OF POSITION : Trail Crew Members will be focused on restoring a section of the Golden Eagle Trail at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and participate in invasive species control within our trail corridors. These individuals will report directly to the Trail Crew Leader, and to Sanctuary Stewardship Staff. Trail Crew Members must be able to perform demanding physical work in adverse environmental conditions with a positive attitude. The best candidates for this position will have a combination of trail maintenance experience as well as the ability to utilize best management practices in a trail/forest restoration. This position requires a passion for conserving natural resources, willingness to learn, and flexibility with various work projects and conditions. REQUIRED SKILLS AND BACKGROUND : Trail work or similar job experience that demonstrates an ability to learn needed skills. Willingness and ability to work in a variety of weather conditions and challenging environments Willingness and ability to work with rock to create steps, walls, drainage devices and other features for multiple weeks during the season. Willingness and ability to perform daily tasks relating to trail maintenance and construction, including but not limited to hiking, walking or standing for 8 or more hours, strenuous digging and moving rock, carrying and using hand tools, etc. Ability to carry a pack weighing 65 lbs for 5 miles over varied terrain. Willingness or ability to operate equipment such as 4WD pickup, plate compactor, and small front end loader Able to work June through August, 40 hours/week At least 18 years of age First Aid and CPR Certifications A PLUS Knowledge of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary’s trail system A PLUS Ability to communicate professionally with crew members, supervisors, volunteers, and visitors Willingness to follow safety management plans and practices throughout the season Primitive housing options available to the right candidates.
