To support our growth, ICF is seeking a Senior Environmental Planner with experience working on NEPA reviews and environmental permitting. Successful applicants to this position would work on-site at a federal agency in downtown Washington, DC for 1 to 2 years to support activities related to environmental permitting and review for infrastructure projects.  At the end of 1 to 2 years, the Environmental Planner would move to ICF’s Fairfax, Virginia or Washington, DC office.  The Senior Environmental Planner would support interactions with the numerous federal agencies that have jurisdiction over these infrastructure projects.  Permitting and review includes the processes required under statutes such as the National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act, and related laws and authorities.  The Senior Environmental Planner will conduct research and analysis, support the development of policy recommendations, follow current developments in permitting and review, and support improvements to the permitting and review process.  The Senior Environmental Planner will support the development of innovative, accurate, timely, and high quality products and services. Senior Environmental Planners at ICF have an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge, gain exposure to major projects, build their project management skills, interact with experts and clients in the field, while building content knowledge and consulting skills.


  • Master's Degree in natural or physical science, public policy, environmental management, or related subjects.  
  • 8+ years of environmental consulting experience (for government or private sector clients) with clients in the infrastructure market sectors (e.g. energy). NEPA and permitting experience is a must.
  • Strong problem solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated initiative and drive to succeed with new and challenging tasks.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, including experience with developing and maintaining project schedules.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task under strict deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to function independently with minimal management oversight.
  • Experience in task and project management.
