Job Description

This position, Environmental Technician I (Job Opening #621184), is open to all State employees and external applicants.

This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours, and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.


The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is a seeking an Environmental Technician to assist the planning section of the Administration and Innovation Division (AID) through environmental policy research and data analysis on several different projects.  Potential projects include developing and administering surveys associated with DEC’s ECO AmeriCorps Program that target AmeriCorps members, service site supervisors, water quality professionals and community members; compiling and analyzing results to determine if the ECO AmeriCorps program is meeting its performance goals.  This position will also support the financial operations section, by performing research involving Vermont Statutory authority on historical and current permit-related fees collected by DEC.  This position will work with staff to populate a database to begin tracking fee information which will assist in the development of mandatory annual reports to the Legislature. 

General Job Description

Technical and administrative work at an entry level for the Department of Environmental Conservation. Duties involve the gathering, processing, and management of technical data and records using computerized systems and technology; equipment maintenance, field inspections, and environmental studies and surveys. Work may be performed in a variety of regulatory, non-regulatory, scientific, and engineering programs. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher level technician, analyst, scientist, engineer, or administrative supervisor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to perform independent research using various methods of resources
  • Ability to translate technical language into layman’s terms
  • Fluency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Access
  • Ability to create and administer surveys 

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Sixty (60) college credits or higher in engineering, a biological-life or physical science, math, or natural resources field.


High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of work experience in engineering, a biological-life or physical science, math, or natural resources field.
