Job Description

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Tidewater Regional Office, seeks a qualified individual to complete Virginia Water Protection Permit Compliance and unauthorized activity inspections, in accordance with applicable Agency Inspection Strategy and Standard Operating Procedures, in a timely and proficient manner in order to ascertain compliance/noncompliance of facilities with their permits and state and federal laws and to provide regulatory and technical assistance to owners and operators of permitted facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

A valid driver’s license. Thorough knowledge of state and federal wetland laws, and associated regulations. Knowledge of DEQ permitting policies and procedures, aquatic and wetlands ecology. Knowledge of engineering principles and practices gained through education or work experience, particularly as related to water pollution and wetlands management techniques. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and negotiate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to read, interpret and properly apply complex policies, guidelines and regulations. Ability to read and evaluate applications and engineering analyses, permits and related correspondence.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in environmental sciences or other related fields and training in wetland identification and delineation is preferred. Certification as a Professional Wetland Scientist or Wetland Delineator is preferred.

The Commonwealth does not provide sponsorship; therefore, applicants must be a citizen or national of the U.S., a Lawful Permanent Resident, or an alien authorized to work.
