This announcement may be used to fill student trainee (Developmental) positions. The Pathways Intern Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed. For more information on the Pathways Internship Program, visit:

Three vacancies, Student Trainee (Park Guide) GS-0099-03, GS-0099-04, and/or GS-0099-05 are anticipated being filled from this announcement.

Job Duties: These positions serve as Student Trainee Park Guides at the GS-0099-03, 04, or 05 grade levels  and involve responding to visitor inquiries, providing direction, information on and orientation regarding services or activities of interest to the public, performing guided tours, presenting informational talks and demonstrations, explaining the significance of an area's natural, cultural, historic and other resource information, educating visitors regarding rules, regulations and safety concerns. 

Physical Demands/Work Environment: The work requires standing for long periods of time, walking for long distances, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending and lifting moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses and repetitive nature of interpretive programs. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors resulting in exposure to a variety of weather conditions.

About the Pathways Program: The Internship Program is for Current students only. The Internship Program provides students in high schools, colleges, trade schools and other qualifying educational institutions with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while completing their education.

If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Agreement which specifies the conditions of your employment as we've indicated in this job announcement.  You will also be required to maintain your student status of attending an accredited educational institution at least half-time, seeking a degree or certificate, and being in good standing.  You will be required to provide proof of enrollment to your supervisor every semester or quarter to document your status.

While this position is not established with the intention to convert the selected intern into a permanent position, if you meet all the requirements for conversion, you may be considered for conversion at this park or other federal locations if positions are available.  In general, interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program. This is not a guarantee, but merely an eligibility for conversion without further competition. To be eligible for conversion, interns must:

* Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program while still a student
* Complete their degree or certificate requirements
* Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the intern will be converted
* Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and
* Perform their job successfully.
