This position is critical to the maintenance of the station and production of warm water fish at the King & Queen Fish Hatchery. Will assist hatchery salaried staff with production season operations to include fish culture duties related to hatching, rearing and stocking/distribution of any and all species/strains/varieties of fresh water organisms, primarily warm and cool water fish, requisitioned by Aquatic management. Assist to collect and maintain accurate hatchery records. Contribute to a team environment. Maintain and operate; vehicles, equipment and tools. Use semi-skilled tasks in variety of trades/utilities to assist with maintenance and appearance/upkeep of grounds and facilities to ensure efficient, safe and secure 24/7 operation. Assist other Hatchery System stations, WMA’S, Aquatic staff, etc., as assigned by VDGIF management.
Possess some knowledge of husbandry. Knowledge of operation and maintenance of: vehicles, buildings, equipment and tools. Perform semi-skilled tasks in variety of trades/utilities using hand and power tools. Operate a variety of lab and power equipment. Ability to collect and record physical, chemical and biological data, recognize trends and abnormalities when they occur, and bring to the supervisors attention. Ability to perform manual labor to include moderate to heavy lifting in excess of 70 pounds in varying indoor, outdoor, wet and dry climates. Ability to interact effectively with coworkers, supervisors, & the public.
Position requires a valid driver’s license and experience in at least one of the following; agriculture, husbandry, fisheries, mechanical/utility trades.
A High School diploma, GED or equivalent is required.
A degree in Aquaculture, Biological Sciences or a related field with experience in husbandry, fisheries, aquaculture; certified in mechanical/utility trades; Pesticide applicator certificate; First aid/CPR/AED certification.
