Job Description

This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Coast Guard, Deputy Commandant for Mission Support (CG-DCMS), Director of Operational Logistics, Office of Base Operations, Base Ketchikan, in Ketchikan, AK.


The selectee will serve as an Environmental Protection Specialist, responsible for environmental compliance and hazardous material management at the Base, which includes oversight for tenant commands and serves as the local technical expert on mandatory, procedural, technical and legal requirements for environmental management, hazardous material management and compliance matters.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

  • Managing and implementing environmental programs.
  • Preparing directives and procedures containing specific policy, objectives and guidelines of the Hazardous Materials Control Program.
  • Advising the Base Facility Engineer on spill response and clean-up operations on site.
  • Serving as the primary point of contact with federal, state and local pollution regulatory officials concerning pollution of the land or water, including any required reporting of spilled quantities.
  • Preparing correspondence for higher authority signature with regard to specific environmental compliance and regulatory issues.
  • Preparing and maintaining applicable permits necessary to ensure compliance.
