The Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC), the Midwest’s leading environmental advocacy and eco-business innovation organization, seeks to hire a skilled Writer to work in our Chicago headquarters office. This position jointly reports to ELPC’s Director of Development and ELPC’s Director of Media Relations and is responsible for: (1) writing compelling and persuasive grant proposals and reports; and (2) writing content for ELPC’s websites, reports, projects and marketing materials. This is an extraordinary time in which ELPC’s effective legal and policy advocacy backed by strong public engagement campaigns through social media are essential for protecting our core environmental values. The Development and Communications Writer will join ELPC’s first-rate team of legal and policy advocates working to accelerate solar and wind power; advance climate change solutions; protect clean air, safe drinking water, and communities against toxics contamination; and protect the Midwest’s Wild and Natural Places.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Development and Communications Writer will: (1) draft and edit grant proposals and reports to funders in order to strategically market ELPC’s mix of policy and legal advocacy projects to national local foundations and individual major donors; (2) Write content and update ELPC’s a mix of websites, and work with ELPC’s program and communications team on major environmental and clean energy reports and marketing efforts. Crafting high-quality development and communications products for ELPC will engage the writer in learning interesting and important legal, policy and economic information on a range of environmental protection, clean energy development, climate change solutions and natural resources protection issues. This will tap the writer’s skills to develop variations of core content so that it can be persuasive to audiences with different backgrounds, interests and priorities. Firm deadlines often apply.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree, at least three years of experience writing about public policy development (e.g., journalism); prior work in the environmental sector is a plus. The successful candidate will have excellent writing and proof-reading skills, a demonstrated record of being able to complete work on schedule, and a passion for environmental, clean energy and climate change solutions issues. Candidates with experience using Adobe Creative Cloud are preferred. Background on clean energy, clean transportation and natural resource protection policy issues is valued. The Writer will work with a team of skilled professionals in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment where attention to details and follow-through is critical.
