The Columbia Water Center in the Earth Institute is committed to understanding and addressing both the role and scarcity of fresh water in the 21st century. The Water Center was established for the purpose of studying the diminishing levels of fresh water and creating innovative sustainable and global solutions.

Columbia Water Center (CWC) combines multidisciplinary academic research with solutions-based fieldwork to develop and test creative responses to water challenges around the world

We seek a Staff Associate to provide research support to the Director of the Water Center and Postdoctoral Research Scientist on specific water and climate-related projects ongoing at the Columbia Water Center such as the Norges Bank project. The aim of the Norges Bank project is to develop a modeling platform to quantitatively assess mining-related water and environmental risks and their financial implications. The new modeling platform will allow investors access to a targeted analysis of water-related mining risk, with a high level of specificity related to type of mining operation, geophysical and socio-political setting, remediation and mitigation needs, financial implications of particular asset risks on the broader company portfolio, and causal connections between risk factors and financial performance.

The Staff Associate will assist with the risk model development for the project. Additionally the Staff Associate will also assist the Director and Postdoctoral Research Scientist with the project coordination of different stakeholders (on-site and off-site clients, partners, researchers and interns) associated with the Norges Bank project. Specific duties will include: Contribute to statistical analysis that support explaining the hypothesis related to reclamation liability estimates; Assist in data quality checks including reviewing, collecting and analyzing gathered data; Review manuals, articles and reports and assist in the writing of reports and research articles based upon the analysis of the data.  

Minimum Degree Required:

Bachelor's degree  

Minimum Qualifications:

All applicants MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered for the position.A Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental sciences, sustainable development, economics, statistics or other related fields of study and 4 year of related experience required. A Master's degree in the aforementioned fields or related field of study may substitute for 2 years of required work experience.

Knowledge and experience in statistics and data analysis are required. A Good understanding of development related issues, primarily sustainable development is also essential.
