The Environmental Law Program (Program) at Harvard Law School seeks a Communications and Outreach Manager to increase the Program’s visibility in the policy community and maximize the impact of staff and faculty research. The C&O Manager will work primarily with the Program’s Environmental Policy Initiative, but will also partner with ELP faculty and Clinic staff for discrete projects, to help the team reach intended policy audiences and develop new policy partnerships. The C&O Manager will take some direction on the content of the communications and outreach, but will enjoy considerable freedom identifying the most effective and appropriate channels of communication, format, and timing of outreach and to execute the Program’s communications strategy.
The work is a combination of substantive policy writing and outreach to and engagement with key stakeholders. The right candidate will be able to communicate complex legal content and its relevance to federal, state, and local environmental and energy policymakers. The Manager will be responsible for creating targeted policy products from academic pieces generated by ELP faculty and staff, to make that work more accessible to policy audiences; and fielding rapid response questions from policymakers or stakeholders on targeted issue areas.
The C&O Manager will also be responsible for identifying critical audiences in Program issue areas; developing relationships with state and federal decision-makers and Hill offices; organizing issue briefings on selected topics; identifying policy outlets and distribution lists for Program products; and maintaining issue-specific key stakeholder contact lists. The C&O Manager will play an important role in the Program’s social media and online presence, developing content for the Program’s website and Twitter account.
Based on the changing needs of the Program, the C&O Manager may be called upon for other tasks, including outreach for Program events. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
The C&O Manager will report to the Director of the Environmental Policy Initiative.
The right candidate can operate independently and balance multiple priorities; and, at the same time, work well on a team. The candidate can anticipate and resolve problems, communicating with the supervisor when appropriate and seeking assistance. A sense of humor is a plus.
A bachelor’s degree and 4 years of relevant experience, preferably in communications, or as a program assistant, legislative correspondent, or policy staff. A law degree or Master’s in environmental policy or public policy can take the place of 2 years of professional experience.
Superior research, writing, editing and proofreading skills are required, as are excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to exercise judgment and discretion. Preference will be given to candidates with environmental law or policy experience, and/or to state or federal legislative experience. Candidate would thrive in a dynamic, entrepreneurial, self-motivated environment.
This is a term appointment currently expected to extend one year from date of hire, subject to funding and departmental need.
