This vacancy may be used to fill other Biological Science Technician, ZT-0404-3 FPL 4 positions throughout NOAA. The position must be alike (e.g.: within the same geographic locations, same grade/band requires the same qualifications as indicated in this vacancy announcement).

SELECTIVE FACTOR: Incumbent must possess experience in rearing rotifers and artemia for marine fish larvae culture and rearing algae for shellfish culture. Your application materials must clearly demonstrate this experience. Failure to do so will result in your application being marked as ineligible.


As a Biological Science Technician, you will perform the following duties:

  • Assist in the design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure for experimental seawater rearing, holding, and culture systems for marine finfish and shellfish eggs, larvae, and adults including recirculation aquaculture systems, flow-through tank systems, and net-pen systems; and ensure high-quality seawater supply.
  • Provide specialized care for marine finfish and shellfish housed in experimental tank systems.
  • Develop methods for the culture of marine fish and shellfish species; design and implement specialized protocols for spawning and larval rearing of marine finfish and shellfish; and conduct research on the various life history stages of marine fish and shellfish.
  • Collect fish and shellfish from the wild to be used for broodstocks to obtain eggs and sperm; collect, prepare, and analyze data on fish and shellfish broodstock reproductive condition and stage; produce reports to inform researchers on the optimal time for hormone induction and spawning of broodstocks; and store information in a database.
