Job Description


The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District), a leader in protecting Florida's water resources, is seeking a Student Intern (preferably a Civil Engineering major) for the Environmental Resource Permit Bureau. The selected candidate will assist engineers in the ERP Evaluation and Compliance Section by conducting investigations of water-resource related permitting and compliance activities. Duties include researching files of record, reviewing applications, generating correspondence, construction inspection site visits, verification of permit compliance, and other duties/functions as necessary. 

The District offers the Student Internship Program to provide students with real work experience and specific hands-on knowledge related to the chosen course of study.

Essential Functions

  • Research files of record
  • Assist the evaluation and compliance engineers with monitoring the application and compliance tracking reports
  • Review application and post-permitting submittals for 62-330, Florida Administrative Code compliance
  • Generate correspondence associated with ERP evaluation and post-permitting compliance through the District's Water Management Information System
  • Make site visits to document status of compliance with Environmental Resource Permits.



  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • At least part-time current enrollment in an accredited college, university, or other recognized educational or vocational program in engineering
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate students or minimum GPA of 3.0 for graduate students
  • Valid driver's license
  • Official school transcript within 30 days of employment
  • Unofficial Transcript attached to application


  • Current freshman or sophomore majoring in Civil Engineering with focus in water resources or related engineering field
  • Availability to work up to 25 hours per week

Work Environment

This student internship position will take place in the Tampa Service Office. This position will require some field work (up to 8 hours per week). The remainder of time will be spent in the office assisting the evaluation and compliance engineers. Student positions will be assigned to work no more than 25 hours per week. These positions are not eligible for insured benefits. 

Work environments vary by assigned business unit.
