Job Description

To manage statewide law enforcement and support personnel, programs, operations and equipment assigned to the Special Operations units. Responsibilities include planning, managing and evaluating programs related to covert investigations into the commercialization of wildlife. By managing a professional staff of up to 19 sworn officers to investigate acute violations that are occurring where the uniformed force is rendered ineffective and other investigations as assigned by the Operations Major. To manage Special Operations boat theft/fraud investigations, the agency’s K9 program and the agency’s dive and tracking teams.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of law enforcement practices and procedures as they apply to wildlife and fisheries management and recreational boating. Demonstrated ability to use law enforcement equipment, vehicles, and boats safely and proficiently. Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct law enforcement operations, to conduct thorough investigations, to collect and preserve evidence, to interpret and apply complex laws, regulations and court rulings. Ability to provide relevant court testimony, to effect a forcible arrest, to communicate effectively in a variety of venues, to deal courteously and tactfully with the public, to provide educational presentations, to meet the physical demands of the job. Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate training as it relates to specific skill sets and certifications. Demonstrated ability to develop, manage and execute a multifaceted budget of up to $100k. Demonstrated ability to work with other divisions and agencies. Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and evaluate employees and provide feedback that ensures productivity and growth. This position will manage up to 19 sworn staff members.

High School Diploma or equivalent and Conservation Police Officer with law enforcement certification from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). Valid driver’s license. Considerable experience in law enforcement, as a Conservation Police Officer.
