Job Description

Duties: Under direct supervision of the Springfield Region Manager/Supervisor, performs beginning level professional duties related to routine scientific field investigations, observations and sampling at facilities and other pollution sources.  Participates in, or conducts field investigations, observations or sampling individually or with other professional staff; assists higher level specialists in preparing comprehensive technical reports pertaining to enforcement of appropriate regulations.

Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience:  Requires the knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college with coursework in the physical, life or environmental sciences (preferably, 15-17 semester hours of coursework in a physical environmental or life science related class curriculum).  Requires one year of professional experience in pollution abatement or a related field.

Specific Job Requirements:Must participate in medical monitoring program and be able to pass a physical exam which is intended to determine whether a person can wear respiratory protection and function in high heat stress situations while wearing chemical protective clothing; employee must be capable of wearing a respirator or other form of respiratory protection (subject to 29 CFR 1910.134) and participate in medical monitoring to so demonstrate; carry and utilize a self-contained breathing apparatus (weighing approximately 25 pounds), in addition to wearing respiratory protection mentioned above, must be able to wear chemical resistant clothing in high heat stress situations while performing strenuous physical tasks (e.g carrying equipment up a steep ravine at a temperature or 100F); to lift heavy equipment (e.g. 45 pounds); hearing and eyesight must be good or correctable in order to respond to emergency field conditions.  Requires ability to operate a computer using word processing, spreadsheet and database software to evaluate facilities.  Must have a valid Illinois driver's license for ability to travel and driving to sites with possible overnight stay.
