Job Description

The National Wildlife Federation, one of America's largest wildlife conservation and education non-profit organizations, is seeking a strategic communications professional to serve as our Conservation Communications Coordinator for our Great Lakes Regional Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.  Reporting to the Director of Communications and Policy Director, the ideal candidate for this job is experienced in traditional and social media, well-connected, entrepreneurial and pro-active, working to elevate the National Wildlife Federation's Great Lakes Regional Center, our experts, and our affiliates in state, regional, and national conversations.  Applicants should be well-versed in a range of Great Lakes conservation issues, including clean water, invasive species, restoration and protection, and climate change, and must be equally comfortable with coordinating coalition press conferences, making pitch calls to print and broadcast media, and writing effective press releases, statements, blogs, and op-eds. A major portion of this position will be education and advocacy around Asian carp.

Major areas of responsibility:

  • Developing and assisting in executing comprehensive, creative and goal-driven communications campaigns for programmatic and policy initiatives, with an initial focus on NWF's campaign to stop Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes.
  • Coordinating and collaborating with program staff to create website, blog and social media content for various programs and initiatives.
  • Writing press releases & media alerts, advisories, op-eds, blogs, social media, etc.
  • Enthusiastically pitching stories, interviews, and on-location coverage opportunities to the media and key bloggers even in cold calls
  • Assisting in the organization and staffing of special events & press conferences (in-person and tele pressers)
  • Assisting in the formation of media partnerships around key NWF events and initiatives;
  • Assisting in planning and executing radio and television media tours
  • Building relationships with the media and NWF staff, affiliates, and coalition partners
  • Strategically using social media to target priority audiences
  • Collaborating with the communications leads at other national conservation groups on messaging & strategy
  • Analyzing and reporting via tracking and reporting media coverage results; using data analysis to increase effectiveness of NWF messaging, etc.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Impeccable copywriting skills and attention to detail. Ability to convey conservation messages across the political spectrum and to a range of audiences.
  • Professionalism, with superior interpersonal abilities, communications and political savvy, ability to manage high profile relationships, and excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent prioritization, multi-tasking abilities and time management skills/ability to meet deadlines.
  • Some experience in developing and executing creative advocacy communications or social media campaigns and willingness to pitch and secure media placements across various media platforms: TV, radio, print, online, etc.
  • Skilled in reporting campaign results in a clear and unbiased manner going beyond traditional impressions as a benchmark
  • Energetic, creative self-starter able to work independently and cooperatively with little supervision
  • Excellent prioritization, multi-tasking abilities and time management skills/ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to meet unanticipated needs, effective problem solving skills
  • Must be willing to roll-up his/her sleeves and do all levels of work as needed with a positive attitude
  • 2+ years relevant work experience in advocacy communications, public relations, and/or political media
  • Hands-on experience with standard systems and services (e.g. Cision, Vocus, IQ Media, TY Eyes, Sitecore, blogging and social media platforms, etc.)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Basic graphic design skills, database experience, or a willingness to learn and take advantage of technology and new media platforms to increase engagement and improve external communication.
  • B.A. or B.S. degree or equivalent work experience in a Media Relations capacity
  • Congressional/Administration press office experience a plus
  • Spanish fluency a plus
  • Passion for natural resource conservation and protection of wildlife and wild places.
  • Ability to travel domestically and work occasional evenings/weekends.
  • Ability to meet unanticipated needs, effective problem solving skills, and willing to roll-up his/her sleeves and do all levels of work as needed with a positive attitude.
