The Virginia Department of Health is seeking a highly motivated employee to join a team of professionals committed to providing Environmental Health protection within the Western Tidewater Health District. The Environmental Health Specialist I will provide oversight and direct service to food establishments, migrant labor camps, campgrounds, hotels, daycares, marinas, their owners and their patrons. This position will inspect approximately 125 food establishments plus district-wide temporary events. This position will perform lead risk assessments and rabies investigations. This position will also respond to general environmental complaints and emergency response situations. Work assignments may be narrow or broad and may require travel to district offices and occasional weekend duties.
High School graduate, GED or equivalent required. Demonstrated ability to communicate well and professionally, both verbally and in writing; ability to work independently with minimum supervision; ability to interpret and apply complex regulations; ability to conduct investigations and inspections in a thorough and professional manner; ability to work cooperatively with fellow employees and the public. Required to maintain all necessary standardizations for position. Must be skilled with Microsoft applications. Must possess valid driver’s license.
B.S. degree in environmental health, biology, Food Science and/or equivalent related training/experience. Experience using databases in VENIS.
