Job Description

The Connecticut Audubon Society seeks an Executive Director to serve as the Society’s chief executive officer, managing its financial and legal obligations, facilities, programs and other operational aspects with a staff of approximately 30 full-time and part-time employees.
 
The Connecticut Audubon Society conserves Connecticut’s environment through science-based education, advocacy and conservation expertise focused on the state’s bird populations and habitats. Founded in 1898, the Connecticut Audubon Society is the state’s original and still independent Audubon organization.
 
The organization is based in Fairfield and has centers in Fairfield, Milford, Glastonbury, Pomfret, and Old Lyme. It operates Birdcraft Sanctuary, a National Historic Landmark, and is currently renovating Birdcraft Museum, in Fairfield. Its EcoTravel program is based in Essex. Trail Wood, a nature preserve and the former home of naturalist Edwin Way Teale, in Hampton, has been recognized by the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation.
 
The Society serves approximately 13,000 individual and family members. It manages 20 wildlife sanctuaries covering more than 3,400 acres. More than 200,000 children and adults annually participate in its education programs, include the award-winning Science in Nature program.
 
The Executive Director reports to a 15-member Board of Directors. He or she works with the Board and staff on fundraising, conservation/advocacy issues, promoting the mission of Connecticut Audubon throughout the state, and building the organization’s brand and reputation.
 
The Executive Director drives the coordination of all initiatives and locations across Connecticut to increase organizational effectiveness. The Executive Director is Connecticut Audubon’s ambassador and spokesperson for the organization’s mission to its members, Board members, individual donors, corporate donors, staff, volunteers, community leaders, granting agencies, governmental agencies, legislators, and the public in general.

Position Requirements

  •  Qualifications and experience as a conservation leader and bird enthusiast
  • Proven record as a not-for-profit manager
  • Sound communications and interpersonal skills and public presence
  • Strong fundraising and development ability
  • History of inspiring staff and volunteers to set and achieve goals
  • Computer literacy


Preferred Abilities

  • Experience in strategic planning (path finding)
  • Successful leadership of organization development and change management (with sensitivity to organizational culture)
  • Leadership style characterized by personal humility offset by strong professional will to achieve long-term results
  • Reputation for empowering and growing staff members

Salary Range
$130 - $150K, depending on experience and demonstrated skills
