General Summary

Nearly one billion people currently do not have enough to eat. The demand for food is projected to increase 70 percent by 2050 as the global population grows to an expected nine billion. An often overlooked solution to this problem is our oceans. A fully productive ocean could provide one nutritious meal a day for 700 million people, or 13 to 15 percent of the animal protein produced on the entire planet. Moreover, wild-caught ocean fish uses no land, needs negligible amounts of water, is the lowest cost per pound to obtain, and provides human health benefits.

Unfortunately, ocean productivity is drastically declining due to overfishing, destructive fishing practices, marine habitat loss and pollution. If action is not taken to reverse this trend now, wild seafood may soon disappear as a major food source for a hungry planet. There is good news, however: restoring wild seafood is achievable and there are many examples of fish rebounding under science-based management, which is also surprisingly feasible. Science gives us clear direction about how to manage fish recovery. Fish will recover if we –

  • Set reasonable fishing quotas and reduce industrial overfishing.
  • Reduce bycatch (the incidental catch of non-targeted animals).
  • Protect marine habitat, both in preserving biodiversity and ecosystem health, as well as from the harmful effects of marine pollution.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Oceana is seeking a Campaign Director for its Washington, DC office.  The Campaign Director will lead a multidisciplinary team to plan, develop, implement and win Oceana’s policy campaigns on climate and energy issues. Candidates must have experience working on and leading campaigns designed to make changes in environmental policy, or a related issue area. To be successful, the candidate should be a skilled and experienced manager, a strategic thinker, and have background in energy policy, marine pollution or climate issues.

We are looking for candidates with strong writing skills, the ability to multi-task and take on projects, and the capability to effectively lead a campaign team.  Candidates should possess at least 5 years of related professional experience at least 3 years managing staff, and a graduate or law degree is a plus.  Candidates must have exceptional management skills with proven ability to lead a professional staff and ability to work effectively in a team environment.  Must have the desire and ability to advocate for complex, aggressive conservation positions in both small and large settings; possess strong oral and written communication skills, and a keen analytical ability. Some experience with grassroots campaigns is a plus. Must be capable of completing projects under tight deadlines and effectively managing a demanding work load.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead in the development and implementation of the campaign
  • Lead the development and achievement of annual and longer term campaign goals
  • Lead and manage a team consisting of scientist(s), advocates, communications professionals, lawyers, grassroots organizers and others to achieve campaign goals
  • Develop advocacy, communications, grassroots outreach and legal strategies to achieve the goals of the campaign
  • Lead the creative development of the campaign
  • Serve as spokesperson for the campaign and related issues in the press
  • Lead in the planning and implementation of events
  • Manage outside relationships with partners, vendors, and decision-makers
  • Develop campaign messages, strategies and materials
  • Establish Oceana leadership on campaign-related issues
  • Manage the research and writing of reports, papers, and other materials
  • Maintain a working knowledge of related science and policy practices
  • Develop and manage campaign budget
  • Assist in fundraising for campaign projects and programs
  • Other responsibilities as appropriate and necessary to achieve campaign objectives
  • Some travel is required. The Campaign Director will report to the Senior Vice President for the United States. 

 

Job Requirements

Education and work experience:

  • Seven (7) years of related professional experience including at least three (3) years managing staff and teams.
  • Experience completing projects under tight deadlines and effectively managing a demanding work load, multi-task and take on projects, and the capability to effectively lead a campaign team.
  • Desire and ability to advocate for complex, aggressive conservation positions in both small and large settings.
  • Graduate or law degree and fluency in Spanish a plus.

  • Must have exceptional management skills with proven ability to lead a professional staff and ability to work effectively in a team environment.   
  • Strong writing and communications skills.
