Job Description

The Sr. Environmental Compliance Engineer oversees and conducts monitoring of the environmental affects of the organization’s activities, institutes preventive and remedial programs as needed, develops forward planning to maintain the highest standards of environmental protection and pollution prevention.  Develops and implements emergency management programs and provides support to the Occupational Safety and Health programs.

Summary of Duties:
Establishes and implements specific environmental monitoring, control activities, and programs to assure compliance with all laws and regulations regarding discharges of any materials which might cause environmental degradation. 
Manages the site’s regulated waste management and recycling program and champions programs to further reduce the site’s environmental footprint. 
Collects and organizes data and prepares reports required by DOE, city, state, federal, or corporate authorities. 
Investigates incidents that might have adverse ecological impact and initiates corrective action. 
Reviews construction projects, requests for services, chemical procurement and changes in manufacturing processes early in the planning stages to assure full consideration of environmental control aspects of all projects. 
Conducts informational meetings for employees, management, customers, and regulators on environmental compliance status and requirements throughout the plant.
Based upon an extensive knowledge of applicable regulations and the ability to read and interpret regulatory requirements, recommends new or revised program activities to assure full compliance with current environmental and emergency management requirements. 
Conducts complex investigations for the purpose of characterizing the environmental impact of past and current plant operations, including sampling plans, records searches, and issuance of work direction to other operations/organizations. 
Provides direct support to KCFO/NNSA including interface with regulators and their contractors in meetings, telephone conversations, presentations, and through provision of comments on regulatory proposals and documents. 
 Researches available and appropriate publications and other information sources to determine the direction of future regulatory actions, determine potential impact and provide comments to the regulators representing the interests of the facility as necessary. 
 Coordinate the emergency management program and recommend actions based on potential impacts on operations and response capabilities.  Maintain the emergency action plan, hazard assessment and other emergency planning documents and procedures including emergency drills and exercises. 
 Provide support to occupational safety and health and occupational medicine programs and activities.


Basic Qualifications:
US citizenship in order to obtain and maintain US Dept of Energy “Q” level security clearance
Bachelor degree in environmental science, engineering, chemistry, or related field.
5+ years of professional experience in Health, Safety or Environmental (HS&E) activities.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the demonstrated ability to work with a diverse spectrum of customers and technical staff.
Ability to work independently, guide the work of others and understand, interpret and implement HS&E and emergency management standards and procedures.
Ability to review and interpret facility design drawings
Strong verbal and written skills.
Demonstrated project enabler, not barrier.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to quickly develop solutions, relying on technical expertise and experience.
