Job Description

Major Duties: This position is located in the Natural Resources Division for Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments. The position is physically located in Tuzigoot National Monument in Clarkdale, Arizona. The position will be working primarily in the field at Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments for native plant restoration and invasive plant management projects. Field activities will include invasive plant control, native seed collection and processing, native plant reseeding, and plantings. This position will also assist park staff with outreach activities including volunteer and youth groups on various restoration and invasive plant projects.

The incumbent reports directly to the Chief of Natural Resources and will manage high priority weed eradication and restoration activities throughout the monuments. Eradication techniques will follow National Park Service Integrated Pest Management strategies. Duties will include: eradication of target exotic species that may include use of herbicides and mechanized equipment; inventory and mapping of exotic plants; collecting, cleaning, storing and dispersing native seed; production of native plants for restoration of sites denuded by human activities; monitoring of restored sites; data management; and assistance in other projects related to plant and soil conservation. Additional natural resource projects such as water resources and wildlife monitoring will be part of this position's duties.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Moderate to high physical effort is required. Some duties require sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of time. Some duties may also require strenuous physical activity such as climbing, lifting, carrying, hiking at high altitudes and rugged, precipitous, and sometimes unstable terrain.


WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in an office or outdoors. The work performed involves regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals.

AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: The monuments are located in the Verde Valley in central Arizona about 90 miles north of Phoenix and 50 miles south of Flagstaff. Tuzigoot is off of Highway 89A by the towns of Clarkdale and Cottonwood along the northern reaches of the Verde River. Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well are off of Interstate 17 near the towns of Camp Verde and Rimrock.
