The Safety, Compliance and Sustainability Team has an immediate opening for an experienced Environmental Compliance Manager who will be responsible for working with a talented team that provides comprehensive guidance worldwide on Environmental and Sustainability issues related to Microsoft’ Surface, Xbox, wearable devices, and other product lines. Help define and drive internal compliance and sustainability best practices through the entire product life cycle including design, use of raw materials, manufacturing and product/packaging disposal/recycling.

This position will report to the General Manager of Safety, Compliance and Sustainability and is based in Redmond, WA.

The purpose of this position is to manage a team that tracks, implements and influences global regulations applicable to the devices and packaging lifecycle and implements sustainability programs related to devices. This position is critical to Microsoft in establishing a national and international reputation for its global hardware compliance and implementing our sustainability strategy.

Responsibilities include:
-      Track and influence global materials regulatory schemes
-      Evaluate emerging regulations
-      Work with industry stakeholder groups, government agencies and other interested stakeholders regarding related issues
-      Interpret same and work with technical experts to plan, develop, and implement chemical and substance policies and programs
-      Review plans and specifications for new chemicals, components and products to ensure they meet substance requirements
-      Work with internal and external technical experts to identify and substitute potentially harmful chemicals, substances and recommend changes to processes or components
-      Evaluate the effectiveness of control mechanisms and management systems
-      Ensure chemicals used in factories meet company requirements
-      Conduct or coordinate training in areas such as chemicals and substance management
-      Provide technical advice and guidance to organizations on how to handle chemical/substance-related problems and make needed changes
-      Work with technical teams to maintain related logs and required recordkeeping
-      Develop and maintain related performance metrics, analytics statistics, records, reporting, and record keeping systems
-      Manage and coach a high performing team including regular performance feedback, career development and conducting performance reviews

Qualifications:
•      A Master’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science or other related subject together with a good understanding of the IT and consumer electronics industries
•      5 – 10 years’ experience in leading and managing a team of product regulatory, compliance or related professionals in a hardware manufacturing company
•      5 -10 years’ experience in working directly with policy influencers and government regulatory agencies
•      1+ year experience in interpreting and implementing RoHS, REACH, WEEE, and Proposition 65 compliance and monitoring and other regulatory programs
•      Experience in compliance integration into product design and manufacturing environments
•      Experience in the successful implementation of environmental management systems to the ISO14001 and other applicable standards
•      Ability to deliver wider sustainability and corporate responsibility counseling
•      Track record of being an enthusiastic and effective team player with experience of leading and influencing internal and external resources to ensure successful outcomes
•      Very strong written and verbal communication skills
•      Strong technical and project management skills
•      Must be flexible, innovative and collaborative and actively “hands on” with respect to workstyle
•      Ability to influence vertically and horizontally
•      Substantial experience in effectively designing and implementing end-to-end projects requiring cross-group collaboration and implied authority
•      Knowledge and use of C2P and database management IT systems for product compliance management is a plus
